Choosing the right assisted living community is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and visiting in person is a vital part of the process. But many people walk into a tour unsure of what to ask or look for. As a local senior living advisor, I’ve guided many families through this journey, and there are five key questions I always recommend asking during a tour.
First, ask what levels of care the community offers and whether those services can change over time. Some facilities only provide basic help with daily activities, while others offer memory care or skilled nursing. It’s important to know not only what care is provided now, but whether your loved one can stay in place if their needs increase in the future.
Next, get a clear understanding of what’s included in the monthly cost. Some communities have all-inclusive pricing, while others charge additional fees for medication management, incontinence care, or other services. Asking detailed questions about the base rate and any possible extra charges helps avoid surprises later.
Staffing is another critical factor. A beautiful building doesn’t mean much if there aren’t enough caregivers. Ask about the staff-to-resident ratio during both the day and night shifts, and how medical emergencies are handled after hours. You want peace of mind knowing your loved one will be cared for at all times.
Don’t forget to ask about activities and social engagement. Staying mentally and socially active is just as important as physical health. Look beyond bingo and ask to see the weekly calendar. Are there outings? Are events varied and well-attended? The vibrancy of a community is often reflected in its activity program.
Finally, pay close attention to the overall culture and atmosphere. Sometimes it’s what you feel that matters most. Do residents seem happy and engaged? Are staff members friendly and attentive? Ask how long staff have worked there and, if possible, speak with a current resident or family member to hear about their experience.
Touring assisted living communities can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. As a local advisor, I help families narrow down their options, schedule tours, ask the right questions, and make confident choices—all at no cost to you. If you’d like help with your senior housing search, I’m just a phone call away and would be honored to support you.
